Many homeowners and businesses are surprised to learn that there are laws governing the cleanliness of the air in enclosed spaces. But there are. The primary piece of legislation related to air hygiene is the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations of 1992. That law states that, in places where ventilation is provided via an HVAC system, the ventilation system must be properly maintained and cleaned.

In addition, Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999 compels employers to conduct air hygiene assessments at regular intervals in order to determine air quality and to assess airborne risks within the system.
