Legionella Explained

Legionella is a bacteria that can cause Legionnaires’ disease – a type of pneumonia that can be contracted by breathing in airborne water droplets.

Thankfully the bacteria and disease are generally quite rare nowadays. However, they can both be extremely dangerous, and in some cases are potentially fatal.

Certain people are unfortunately more susceptible to Legionnaires’ disease:

  • People aged 45 and over
  • Heavy smokers and drinkers
  • People suffering from chronic respiratory diseases
  • Those with compromised immune systems
  • Individuals with kidney issues

Legionnaires’ Disease – The Symptoms

The symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease are very similar to a winter flu. Patients will experience chills, muscle pains, fever and headaches. They may also suffer from a cough.

More extreme cases will see sufferers getting mentally confused and potentially having diarrhoea. Fortunately, the disease can’t be spread from person to person. However, in serious cases, it can prove to be fatal.

Legionnaires’ disease is contracted by inhaling very small droplets of water that contain legionella – the bacteria that sits behind the disease. These water droplets tend to come from things like hot tubs, air conditioning systems, humidifiers, taps and showers that aren’t regularly used.

For this reason, it is generally caught in hotels, office blocks and hospitals – as opposed to in residential homes. It’s also not generally caught by drinking water that contains the bacteria, or by swimming in lakes and ponds.

As an employer, landlord or someone in charge of any kind of premises, you are obliged to meet the requirements set out in various acts and regulations, in relation to legionella:

  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
  • The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2022
  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

These three pieces of law collectively state that you must ensure you have a legionella risk assessment, and a framework for prevention and control, in place.
